Podcasts and Blogs for Parents!

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

"Lori, I want to support my child but I'm so busy! How am I supposed to learn about an entirely different way to communicate?"

Whew! Take a deep breath. No one is expecting you to know everything right away. Trust your SLP as a resource and rely on him/her to tell you the immediate things you need to know. But the truth is, a lot of us SLPs aren't parents. Here are a couple of blogs/podcasts along with a summary that you can check out when you've only got a small window of time!

Desirae is the mom of a child with cerebral palsy that speaks about her experiences of being introduced to AAC in South Africa. She first rejected this system for fear that Savannah would “stick out” . Read about her journey to accepting her child's needs.

The Nieder family has a little girl with complex communication needs. I love this post because it highlights different systems you can use and encourages flexibility and patience.
