Self-Talk: Use the AAC device to talk about what YOU are seeing, hearing, doing, or feeling.
Pick an activity! This can be something you're already doing such as cleaning or cooking dinner!
Pick one or two words to model. For cleaning this can be "put" and "clean". For cooking this can be "make" and "stir"
Get to talking! The point is to immerse your child in language, so although you'll be verbally modeling other things you're doing, we want to be sure to repeat our target words over and over pointing to them on our low tech device or pushing the button if you have a speech generating device!
Parallel-Talk: Talk about what is happening TO your child! Use words that talk about what he or she is seeing, hearing, doing, or feeling.
This strategy works best with a preferred activity
Pick one or two words to model based on the activity. For playing with cars this could be "go" or for playing with dolls this may be "baby".
Get to talking! Again, the point is to give your child as much language as possible. Just be sure your target words are repeated often!
